As more and more carmakers enter the field of electric vehicles, luxury carmaker Aston Martin (Aston Martin) is "not to be outdone" and announced that it will produce electric models in the UK from 2025.

Lawrence Stoll (Lawrence Stroll), the Canadian billionaire boss of Aston Martin, said in an interview that "battery sports cars and SUVs" would be produced at Aston Martin's factory, not by partner Mercedes-Benz, which owns 20 per cent of Aston Martin.

At present, the UK car industry is facing many difficulties, including the decline in demand caused by the novel coronavirus epidemic and the difficulty in ensuring new investment to keep the industry running. Last year, Stroll took the lead in seeking £500m of external financing for the beleaguered car company.

In October, Aston Martin announced a partnership with Daimler's Mercedes-Benz, which will increase its 20 per cent stake in Aston Martin by 2023, making it one of its largest shareholders.

Under the agreement, the existing supply agreement between the two companies, effective in 2013, will be expanded to allow Aston Martin to use Mercedes' hybrid and electric drive technology. The UK carmaker reported last week that its loss quadrupled to £466 million ($645 million) in 2020 as sales shrank.

There is no doubt that Aston's entry into the field of electric vehicles is also in line with the British government's requirement that every new car sold in the UK must be electric or hybrid by 2030.

In November, British Prime Minister Johnson said he wanted to advance Britain's ban on the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars and vans from the currently planned 2040 to 2030. It is understood that the new goal is part of his overall plan to shift the UK to energy and transport that are more conducive to climate change. If the UK implements a ban on fossil fuel vehicles in 2030, the UK will be the first country to impose a ban on fuel vehicles after Norway, which will impose a ban in 2025.

While "succumbing to" the rules, Aston also wants to keep his original intention. In December, Stroll said it would continue to produce cars driven by pure internal combustion engines beyond 2030. The British carmaker has vowed to cater to gasoline enthusiasts around the world, despite a ban on the sale of diesel locomotives in the UK after 2030.
