Dec zinc imports decline 17%

China’s imports of refined zinc stood at 93,800 mt in Dec, down 17.4% month on month and 7.02% year on year

SHANGHAI, Jan 24 (SMM) – China’s imports of refined zinc stood at 93,800 mt in December, down 17.4% month on month and 7.02% year on year, showed the latest data from China Customs.

This brought the annual imports to stand at 715,400 mt, up 5.8% from 2017.

In December, refined zinc originated from Spain accounted for the most, 44%, followed by Belgium, taking up for 13%. Australia took the third place, accounting for 12%.

For the year of 2018, refined zinc originated from Australia accounted for the most, 26%. South Korea took the second place, and the proportion came in at 20%.

Australia and South Korea’s zinc is exempted from China’s duties.

JISCO is the only company in China to have achieved large-scale batch production, filling the technological gap in related fields in China. The products have been successfully applied in highly corrosive environments such as cooling towers, motor housings, energy storage, and offshore PV, and have been exported to multiple countries including Thailand, the Philippines, and Argentina.

[SMM Zinc Morning Comment] Overnight, the most-traded SHFE zinc 2605 contract opened at 23,960 yuan/mt. At the beginning of the session, bears reduced positions, briefly pushing zinc prices up to touch a high of 24,070 yuan/mt. However, lacking upward momentum, SHFE zinc fluctuated downward throughout the session, hitting a low of 23,915 yuan/mt before finally closing at 23,935 yuan/mt, up 30 yuan/mt (0.13%). Trading volume dropped to 33,598 lots, while open interest fell by 3,378 lots to 63,962 lots.
