SMM 2017 Copper&Aluminum Summit: Construction and Transportation Industries are Major Sources of Aluminum Scrap in China

Li Shilong, Vice President of CMRA, indicated that construction and transportation industry is the major source of aluminum scrap in China.

SHANGHAI, Mar. 23 (SMM) - The 12th Shanghai Copper & Aluminum Summit 2017, organized by SMM and Shanghai Nonferrous Metals Association, is opening in Shanghai, China from March 23-24, 2017.

Li Shilong, Vice President of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association Recycling Metal Branch (CMRA), indicated on the Summit that construction and transportation industries are major sources of aluminum scrap in China.

As 1.5 kg of aluminum can be recycled per square meter, 525 million kg of aluminum can be recycled from construction industry every year with floor area at 350 million square meters.

China’s penetration of motor vehicles was 290 million sets as of late 2016 with auto penetration at 194 million sets. As 250 kg of aluminum can be recycled per vehicle, there will be 100 million tonnes of aluminum can be recycled from construction industry in 2030.

[SMM Aluminum News Flash] This week, the operating rate of leading secondary aluminum enterprises pulled back slightly WoW, mainly dragged down by weakening demand. Currently, downstream enterprises generally maintain just-needed restocking with low willingness to accept high-priced supplies, and the overall market trading atmosphere remains subdued. On the cost side, primary aluminum prices held up well this week, pushing up production costs for enterprises. Some producers raised their quotes accordingly; however, constrained by lackluster demand follow-through, the price increase of finished products was notably weaker than that on the aluminum scrap side, and industry profit margins remained under pressure and continued to narrow.
