[SMM Newsflash: Guangdong: By the End of 2025, the Proportion of Copper, Lead, and Zinc Smelting Capacity Above the Benchmark Energy Efficiency Level Will Reach 50%]

According to reports, the Guangdong Provincial Government has issued the "Guangdong Province 2024–2025 Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Action Plan," which proposes promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction transformation in the non-ferrous metals industry. The plan advocates the adoption of superconducting DC induction heating technology and integrated die-casting technology for aluminum alloy components of NEVs, accelerating energy conservation and carbon reduction transformation in the non-ferrous metals industry. By the end of 2025, the proportion of copper, lead, and zinc smelting capacity above the benchmark energy efficiency level will reach 50%, and the proportion of renewable energy usage will further increase. The energy efficiency level of aluminum products and lead profile projects will improve by approximately 5%. Capacity below the benchmark energy efficiency level in the non-ferrous metals industry will undergo technological transformation or be phased out. From 2024 to 2025, the energy conservation and carbon reduction transformation in the non-ferrous metals industry is expected to achieve energy savings equivalent to approximately 100,000 mt of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 260,000 mt.

Global Copper Mine Production Flat in Q1 2026, Indonesia's Grasberg Mine Sees Sharp Decline
Preliminary data indicated that global copper mine production in Q1 2026 was basically flat, with copper concentrates production declining by 1.1%, offset by a 3.3% increase in solvent extraction-electrodeposition (SX-EW) production.Although global mine production benefited from additional output from capacity ramp-up at projects in several countries, significant declines in copper concentrates production in Chile, the DRC, and Indonesia offset global growth. In Indonesia, copper concentrates production at the Grasberg mine fell by 42%, as the severe mud inflow event that occurred in September last year continued to impact production at the mine.
